The 8 Missions

Our 8 Missions describe the breadth of scope of the impact projects delivered by members of The Purpose Xchange. Together they reflect our ambition and the desire for the community to make significant and enduring positive impact on the world around us. The Missions also describe the dire state of our societies and our planet, and the urgency needed to put things right before it is too late.

1. GLOBAL WARMING

"2011-2020 was the warmest decade recorded, with the global average temperature in 2019 reaching 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels. Human-induced global warming is presently increasing at a rate of 0.2°C per decade. An increase of 2°C is associated with potentially catastrophic impacts on the natural environment and human health and wellbeing. For this reason, the international community has recognised the need to keep warming well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit it to 1.5°C."

2. SUSTAINABILITY

"Sustainability means the integration of environmental health, social equity and economic vitality in order to create thriving, healthy, diverse and resilient communities for this generation and generations to come. The practice of sustainability recognizes how these issues are interconnected and requires a systems-wide approach and the acknowledgement of its complexity."

3. POVERTY

"Poverty means not being able to heat your home, pay your rent, or buy the essentials for your children. It means waking up every day facing insecurity, uncertainty, and impossible decisions about money. It means facing marginalisation – and even discrimination – because of your financial circumstances. The constant stress it causes can lead to problems that deprive people of the chance to play a full part in society."

8. TRUTH

Post-truth was named word of the year in 2016 by the Oxford Dictionary following the period around the 2016 United States presidential election and the Brexit referendum.
